Swakopmund is not only a pretty little town with German charm but it also has several attractions in the surrounding area. For example, Sandwich Harbor and the highest sand dunes in the world are just around the corner. Forty kilometres away is Walvis Bay, Namibia’s only deep-sea port, where the ugly cruise ships, currently dock.
But Walvis Bay is best known for its lagoons, which form a unique wetland that attracts waterbirds from all over the world. Over 150,000 migratory birds are attracted to these lagoons and make a stopover here. Some come from Siberia and fly up to 14,000 (!) kilometres to get here. The most impressive time, however, is when thousands of flamingo’s land and look for food in the shallow lagoons. What a picture when these elegant birds wade through the water on their long legs or land on the water in large flocks.
