Namib Naukluft Park: Larger than Switzerland!
To reach the Rock Arch it takes a good hour and a half from Swakopmund. And you need a 4×4 vehicle with low gear. If you don’t have that, you won’t be able to make the last climb and will end up stuck at the bottom.
The last time we visited Rock Arch was during New Year’s Eve/New Year 2022/23. Now we were here during Christmas. You cannot reserve this camp; but you need a permit to visit the Namib Naukluft Park. If there is already another vehicle under the rock, then you look for another place in the area.
Luckily, we were the only ones who wanted to spend Christmas here. On the journey we met fourteen ostriches that marched past us in a column of one. A little later we came across a group of springboks; later on, two red-crested korhaans. Of the zebras that can also be found here, we only saw the dung. At the Rock Arch itself we had a couple of mountain wheatear as guests. They were happy that we brought them a Christmas present: water and bird seed. They thanked us with friendly chirps…
PS: Our camp can be seen at the top right of the photo!
