VIA SPREETSHOOGTE PASS TO THE MILKY WAY

What a view!

On the journey south, we took a detour to Swakopmund. There we fetched our passports at home, which we had forgotten and we need them for the journey through the Kagaligadi National Park, which is located in South Africa. A day later we drove to Windhoek, where we had to attend some appointments.

On February 28th, 2025 we left Windhoek and drove to Rehoboth. Shortly afterwards we turned off onto a gravel road that took us southwest to the Spreetshoogte Pass. We drove this steep pass – not suitable for heavy vehicles and trailers – for the first time in 1994 when we shipped our vehicle from Australia to Cape Town. From there we started a journey through southern Africa. And the Spreetshoogte Pass was one of the destinations we went to.

We reached the pass in the early afternoon. Shortly after the top of the pass, which is just under 1,7000 meters, we turned to the campsite that we knew from previous trips. It is beautifully situated and offers a great view of the Namib and the adjacent sand dunes around Sossusvlei. However, the absolute highlight came when it got dark! It was a new moon and we got to see the Milky Way in all its glory – we won’t forget that night!
