
South Africa is on the other side!
A group of Glossy Starling thanked us the next morning with a morning concert. It was beautiful and sunny when we set off at 9 am. There were almost 400 kilometers ahead of us, which would take us to the Richtersveld National Park and South Africa that day.
On the D 707 we headed towards Aus on a sandy track. When we got there it was eleven o’clock and time for coffee at the train station hotel. It is known for its good coffee, very friendly service and, above all, the excellent cakes! We treated ourselves to a large piece of passionfruit cheese cake, which was almost too much for both of us!
After refueling in Aus and adjusting the air pressure in the tires, we continued our journey to Rosh Pina (The road is tarred and it makes sense to pump up the tires.) A good two hours later we reached Rosh Pina, a mining town on the border with South Africa. Shortly afterwards, in Sendelingsdrif, we completed the customs formalities on the Namibian side. A small ferry then took us to the other side of the Orange River, which forms the border between Namibia and South Africa. We had our passports and carnet stamped, paid the entrance fee for the Richtersveld NP and drove to our overnight spot, which was only a few kilometers away on the Orange River. Now we had more than earned an aperitif…
