UNDER THE SOUTHERN CROSS

When night falls...

The Southern Cross, an important constellation for the earlier caravans in the desert, can be seen primarily in the southern sky. You can see it even better when there is no moon in the sky. Since we had a new moon three days ago, the moon just appears as a narrow crescent and only very briefly before it disappears below the horizon.

So, we had the opportunity to admire the Southern Cross for several nights. We saw it once on the Spreetshoogte Pass while staying up late at night. Once we saw it from our king size beds while staying at the Desert Grace Lodge. And yesterday we saw it at two in the morning when we went to the toilet in Betta, at the campsite.

It was only ninety kilometres to drive from Betta and by midday we were already at the Koiimasi farm, where Bengal cats are bred. They do look very nice; but they also meow very demandingly. When I heard the cat, I was happy that our kitten only makes a subtle meow when she wants something or jumps on our bed at night…
