TÜTÄTO! – POSTAUTO

A narrow and steep driveway!

I still remember how we used to sing as children: «Tütäto Postauto». That rhymed so beautifully back then; and it still rhymes today. The special sound of the postbus horn can still be heard in the Swiss Alps today. We last heard it a few days ago.

The idea of making a detour to the Kiental after playing golf in Thun was spontaneous. This valley branches off from the Kandertal near Reichenbach. From there, a narrow road, which gets even narrower and, above all, steeper, leads to the Griesalp via the village of Kiental. We have driven many steep routes on our travels. But the route to the Griesalp has a top spot in terms of the view and the steepness of the road: it’s 28% on the last section.

When I asked the post bus driver at the bus stop how far it was to the Griesalp, he answered me in the broadest Oberland Bernese German: «Vo hie us geit’s numeno obsi». (In German: From here it only goes up.) That’s how it was. I was glad that I was able to snake my way behind the post bus up to the Griesalp and when I got to the top, I complimented the post bus driver!
