Once in a Lifetime!
When we landed in Windhoek at the beginning of November, coming from Frankfurt, the country was waiting for rain. Even then it was rumored that a particularly good rainy season could be expected this year. We didn’t know at the time whether it was wishful thinking or a well-founded weather forecast.
It is now clear that 2021 will go down in Namibia’s history as a particularly good rainy year. The rainy season lasts until the end of April; but the country’s dams are already full to the brim. And Sossusvlei is under water! Something that happens every ten years at most. And we are lucky to be here and to experience that moment!
A few weeks ago, the Tsauchab river carried so much water due to extensive rainfall lasting several days that it flowed from Sesriem sixty kilometers west and filled the clay pan, Sossusvlei, which is located in the middle of huge sand dunes. An unforgettable sight; especially in the early morning hours when you are alone!
PS. On the drive to Sossusvlei we came across a herd of oryx antelopes standing in high, green grass! And this morning we saw a group of wildebeest grazing in the campsite! Incredible!
