SPLASHING IN THE TSAUCHAB RIVER

What a refreshement!

The fact that Sossusvlei is currently under water is thanks to three rivers: Zebra, Haruchas and Tsauchab. Only when all three rivers carry water at the same time, the dunes in Sossusvlei get wet feet. One of these rivers, the Tsauchab, was on our way to Maltahöhe.

It was a beautiful and sunny morning when we said goodbye to Sossuvlei on Saturday, February 6th, 2021. The weekend was approaching and the evening before some vehicles with Windhoek or Swakopmund license plates had already arrived here. (The Namibians also want to see the dunes of Sossusvlei standing in the water – so it was time to make way for them!)

An hour later we reached Camp Hauchabfontein, which is located on the Tsauchab. Here the river has several natural pools where you can swim. We were curious what to expect. Certainly, clean water, because the pools have been thoroughly rinsed in the last few weeks because of the heavy rain. We put on our swimming suit and plunged into the cool water …

PS. After the heat in Sesriem, the cooling came just as it was called. We sat in the clear water for hours and watched the swallows dart just over our heads…
