INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

Namibia is not only a popular travel destination for Europeans. American and Japanese tour groups are also becoming increasingly common. For example, our seatmate on the Qatar Airways Airbus was a Vietnamese-American woman who was looking forward to her first trip to Namibia. We met a Japanese tour group at the Fish-Deli in Swakopmund, where we often eat fish or order sushi.

And there we had a funny experience: The three Japanese wanted to pay after dinner. But the English of the one who asked for the check was not beyond reproach. Instead of the check the waitress brought another three glasses of beer – the same as what the Japanese had already drunk.

They were amazed when there was another beer on the table in front of them. The waitress apologized and took the beer back. Since I knew that she would probably have to fork out for it herself, I «sacrificed» myself, took a glass from her hand and paid for it. The Japanese thanked me several times for my noble gesture and bowed: Cheers!
