We miss you!
On October 25th, 2022 we saved Piep and Matz, the two sparrows, from an early death. We pipette fed them for weeks and even took them on a trip to Omaruru. We always had to be careful that our kitten, didn’t get too close to them. And once Brigitta was able to save Matz at the last moment when the cat almost had him between her teeth!
In the last few days, the flying skills of the two young sparrows have gotten better and better. They flew around the garden and only returned to the cage to eat. (By the way, so did a few other sparrows, who quickly discovered that they could get free food here – but Piep and Matz let them have their way.) The farewell to the two, who grew very dear to us, was therefore foreseeable. Perhaps in the future we would see them again in the evenings when they sleep under the protection of our bougainvillea?
When Brigitta stepped onto the forecourt some days ago, Matz was already waiting for her. There was no sign of Piep, however. We heard Matz calling him; like he does every day when they’ve been traveling apart. Fifteen minutes later I saw Piep lying dead on the lawn. It hadn’t been the victim of a cat attack. But dead he was; whatever…
PS. Brigitta dug a small hole under a bush in our garden. We buried Piep there. We won’t forget the funny little sparrow. Both of us and Matz miss him very much!
