Face to face with a white rhino!
On our way to Gabarone, the capital of Botswana was the Khama Rhino Sanctuary. Of course, we didn’t miss out on a visit there, even though we had only visited the last rhinos a few days ago in Orapa.
We were assigned a nice camp under a mighty hickory tree. The nearest neighbor was about two hundred meters away – no comparison to what you experience when you camp in Switzerland. Before we moved into the camp, we treated ourselves to a St. Louis in the restaurant – the most famous beer brand in Botswana.
We were about to take our first sip when we were made aware that there was a rhino standing at the watering hole just a hundred meters away. A sign warned people not to approach them closer than fifty meters. That’s a good thing, because these heavy animals can become aggressive if they feel threatened by themselves or their young. (I also love Rhinos because they always make me feel really slim!)
On the subsequent game drive through the reserve, we met a group of five rhinos, accompanied by a young one. There are said to be fifteen black and white rhinos in total on the reserve. They, too, are protected by high barbed wire fences and armed patrols.
