Carmine Bee-Eater

The carmine bee-eater is a bird in the bee-eater family. It occurs in southern Angola, Namibia in the Caprivi Strip, from southern Zambia to southern Malawi and in Mozambique. The species is an intra-African migratory bird, reaches the breeding area between August and September and leaves again from December to March/April to overwinter in Burundi. Scarlet bee-eaters are very sociable. Breeding takes place in large dense colonies with hundreds of nests or more preferably on steep riparian edges of fresh, vegetation-free sand, but also in sandy subsoil. The nest tubes are dug by both sexes. The clutch consists of 2-5 eggs. The diet consists of a variety of insects up to 80% from bees.
