Preparation is a Celebration!
From the outside, the historic Hansa Hotel in Swakopmund looks like a typical German hotel from the last century. This impression is reinforced when you enter the elegant reception hall and take a look at the white-covered tables. You are greeted by a friendly black employee who asks what the guest would like.
That evening we were in the mood for a colonial coffee, for which the Hansa Hotel is known. We were shown the way to the bar. When we entered there, we thought we were in an English club. A fire burned in the fireplace and well-dressed people sat in soft, upholstered armchairs, chatting quietly in English. (The last time we had a similar experience was when we traveled through Zimbabwe in 1994!)
A liveried waiter asked what we wanted in English and was pleased when we chose a colonial coffee. He prepared it in front of us on a small stove. It tasted excellent! No wonder, because the ingredients consist of three different liqueurs, coffee and on top there is whipped cream!
