PRETZEL BAKER IN SWAKOPMUND

Fresh from the oven!

We made some interesting acquaintances in Swakopmund and especially in the Golf Village Rössmund. People from all over the world live here. Some worked in oil fields or as air traffic controllers around the world and retired here. Others have finished their working lives in Windhoek and are enjoying the cooler climate of Swakopmund, which is by the sea. And then of course there are many Germans and Swiss who swapped their homeland for Namibia and now live here.

Germans love good beer, good bread and good sausage. And if you come from Bavaria, you don’t want to miss out on pretzels! Like Sigi and Molly, who live a few houses away from us in Rössmund. Sigi, a true Bavarian, introduced us to the art of baking pretzels a few days ago. During an hour he showed us what ingredients are needed and what we need to pay attention to so that a pretzel not only tastes good but also looks good.

A few days later we baked our first pretzels. Brigitta placed the recipe that she had written based on Sigi’s information in front of her. Then it went step by step. Everything actually went quite well – except for the shaping. A pretzel should not only taste good, but also look appealing enough to bite into. Our pretzels showed that they were a first attempt. But they still taste good. And no pretzel baker has fallen from heaven yet – practice makes perfect!

Speaking of Christmas in Swakopmund: Lübeck marzipan, Dresden Stollen and Lindt chocolate are offered in the shops during the Christmas season. So, there is everything my heart desires!
