A LOOK AT THE MILKY WAY

A Night to Remember!

Last night I remembered Xi Ling, our Chinese guide, who accompanied us on our 2011 trip through Tibet. She was overwhelmed when she saw the Milky Way for the first time in her life at over 4,400 meters! (In Chinese cities, the chance of seeing stars is rather slim; you can only see them on the flag of China!)

It’s completely different in Namibia! We sat around the campfire until 10 pm last night. If we looked up, we saw the Milky Way in all its glory. The constellation Saucepan stood above us. Stars twinkled in competition and every now and then a shooting star shot out of space so that we could make a wish. A lonely satellite moved its orbit around our beautiful globe. It was a night and moments that will remain unforgettable…

In the afternoon Marianne, the farmer’s wife, had brought us not only a dessert, but also a freshly baked bread. We savored it this morning, along with fresh butter, grapefruit jam from Tahiti and honey from South Africa. Then we packed our things and said goodbye to our hosts, their 3,000 sheep’s and 120 cattle.

PS. We have already met many nice hosts! But if we had to give a first prize, then Marianne and Pieter, the owners of this farm, would have deserved it …
