Surprise, surprise, surprise...
Orapa not only has diamond mines and a very well-stocked Spar – Brigitta also bought food for the kitten there! – but also a game reserve that specializes in protecting rhinos. Like so many other things, these are «dismantled» by the Chinese and their horns are removed. (We wish the plague on anyone who does or has this done!)
Brigitta had packed the kitten in a well-padded Banana-cardboard box and so the three of us drove to the park. We had barely passed the entrance gate when we met the first kudus, which look very pretty with their long ears. Afterwards we came across a giraffe and many more kudus – we had already seen many of them. But then we suddenly found ourselves in front of a rhinoceros with his young. Just a few kilometers further we came across a group of five (!) rhinos standing in the bush. Wow!
We were told that there are over fifteen rhinos enjoying their lives in the game reserve. Protected by armed rangers who patrol day and night. (By the way, they don’t bother with poachers for long; they shoot before they ask – that’s a good thing!) The entire area is also protected with high fences and barbed wire. Good for the Rhinos. Bad for the poachers, let the devil take them…
