In 1991, on my first trip to Namibia, I ate the famous apple strudel in Solitaire for the first time. It is widely known and by all travelers to Namibia. One stops here; and if you don’t fill up, you at least have a coffee and a piece of apple strudel. (Solitaire and apple strudel – they go together like Switzerland and chocolate!)

It was a sunny morning when we arrived in Solitaire on February 3rd, 2021. In contrast to previous visits, however, we were the only guests! Alone in Solitaire! We talked to the two employees who run the store. The restaurant and bakery were closed for lack of customers. But we got the apple strudel anyway. What would Solitaire be without this famous delicacy! Even if the «inventor» of this business idea has now died – his grave is in the front of the gas station – his idea fortunately survived. Rest in peace!

PS. «Alone in Solitaire» – that sounds like a film title. We sat on the terrace, drank a coffee, ate an apple strudel and let Solitaire’s loneliness sink in …
