Better be prepared!
With our succulents on board, we drove to Nieuwoudtville. (We have trouble pronouncing these Afrikaans names, adding to the amusement of the locals!) From Nieuwoudtville we took a detour to a waterfall. I’m always skeptical because if you come from a valley where you can see waterfalls from the kitchen window, then that’s not a tempting goal for me. Brigitta, however, set off and wasn’t too disappointed. Certainly no Rhine, no Trümmelbach and certainly no Angel Fall; but we are here in a dry region of South Africa.
We took our next break at the Travelers Rest, a roadhouse that we knew from last year. And just like back then, we ate well, drank a cold beer and Brigitta bought three kilos of organic Rooibos tea, which has a lot of vitamin C but no caffeine. Equipped like this, we drove a few kilometers to a camp in the middle of rocks, where we met a unique creature named Marius. But that’s another story…
The next morning, we went via Wupperthal (that actually exists here) towards the Eselbank-Pass. We didn’t know what to expect. And that was a good thing. For the next hour and a half, we climbed at walking pace on a donkey path to an altitude of over 1,000 meters, passig some grazing donkeys. What a splendor of flowers all around. And what a view! Simply fantastic!
