Namibia is a large country; but only thirty percent of the land area is cultivable. Added to this is the water shortage, which makes it impossible to grow vegetables, olives, bananas or citrus fruits in many places.
However, there is a company, Avagro, that has taken on this challenge. A few kilometres outside Swakopmund, in the Swakop River, there are large tents; they are actually huge greenhouses. Underneath them, protected from too much sun and wind, tomatoes, zucchinis, watermelons, bananas, flowers and much more grow. A sophisticated irrigation system that adds water and fertilizer to the plants drop by drop ensures good growth. Outside the greenhouses there are olive trees that also bear fruit and from which olive oil is produced.
Two years ago, we met Leonie, a young German entrepreneur who runs this flagship project. And we were excited to see how the project had developed in the meantime. Very good, as we discovered during our visit on December 3rd, 2024, in the Swakop River!
