LIKE THE MIGRATION BIRDS

Start for the long journey north!

Incredible how the time flies by! The six months we spend in southern Africa are already over. Brigitta is packing and our cat senses that she will soon be going on vacation at Gecko Ridge until we pick her up again in five months.

The day before yesterday I read in the NZZ that the spring migration of migratory birds includes two (!) billion birds. These fly from southern Africa, central Africa or the Sahel to Europe to breed. Since yesterday I also know that many of them don’t fly around the Alpine chain but rather fly over it. (Bird migration usually takes place at night and therefore not everything is known about it.)

We are part of this migration to the north. On Friday, March 15, 2024 we will fly from Walvis Bay to Johannesburg. From there we take an overnight flight with Emirates to Dubai. After a short stopover, we continue to Zurich on Saturday morning. On Sunday morning we drive to the Bernese Oberland, to Kandersteg.

We are looking forward to the five months in Europe before we fly back to Africa with the birds in autumn 2024. Maybe we’ll see snow again this year? Our cross-country skis are in the basement and are happy to be used again…
