IN THE HEART OF THE CITRUS PLANTATIONS

Groedekloof Sitrus: An insight into citrus fruit sorting

On November 16th, 2023, Orapa didn’t wake us up until 5:15 a.m. A look outside showed that we can expect another beautiful day. We have had nice weather since we crossed the border into South Africa. (When angels travel, the sun shines!)

We were on the move at seven o’clock – the early bird catches the worm! The narrow road led us down the valley in many bends, along a rushing river. What could be nicer than being out and about early in the morning? Orapa seemed to be enjoying the ride too; he sat on the dashboard and looked interestedly through the windshield. (He gets braver every day and makes jumps that she only dreamed of a few days before!)

We reached Ceres, made a few purchases at Spar and then continued towards Citrusdal. As the name aptly suggests, this is the center of South African citrus cultivation. The main harvest takes place in November and so we searched in vain for Padstals (fruit stands along the road) where citrus fruits are offered.

Our destination was The Baths, where we wanted to enjoy splashing in the hot water for two days. But we couldn’t find a suitable place and so we turned around. On the way here we noticed a modern building marked Groedekloof Sitrus. There we met Johan, who told us a lot about the citrus business. In return we told him about our trip and how much we liked South Africa. Finally, Johan gifted us a large sack of freshly picked oranges and lemons. (So, our vitamin requirements for the next few days are guaranteed!)

Speaking of which: Lemons are very good for gout, arthritis and other ailments – although we don’t have any of those; but prevention is better than cure!
