Baobab gazing!
Baobab! Even the name sounds like Africa. Legend has it that when God created the world, he stuck the baobab into the ground with the roots upwards. And that’s exactly what these huge trees look like, which live for over a thousand years and often have a circumference of more than twenty meters.
It was a Baobab tree that attracted us and we knew its location from a previous visit. It stands west of Tsumke, in a San conservancy. For a few years now, the San have been trying to benefit from the emerging tourism. They do this by setting up a simple camp under the largest Baobab. There is an outhouse, but no water or electricity. But there is pure nature and an unforgettable night under a tree that reminds us of the transience of life – who lives to be a thousand years old!
We arrived at camp later in the afternoon and after a stop at Roy’s Camp where we drank a Rock Shandy. We were amazed when we came across a group of tourists sitting at a long table enjoying dinner. Seven off-road vehicles were lined up around the Baobab! We wished them «Bon appétit», took a detour and drove a few hundred meters further to the next Baobab, where we were alone.
