Damaraland is the name still used today for an area in northwestern Namibia that was named at the time of German Southwest Africa and which is the main settlement area of the Damara of the same name. It extends south of the Kaokoveld to about today’s national road B2 between Swakopmund and Usakos and in the west reaches up to the Skeleton Coast. Part of this is also the Grootberg and the Brandberg massif as well as the northern foothills of the Great Edge step.
The Kaokoveld Desert occupies a coastal strip covering 45,700 square kilometers and is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Namibia savanna woodlands to the east, and the Namib Desert to the south. The Kaokoveld is a harsh desert of drifting sand dunes and Rocky Mountains. The Kunene River is the only permanent watercourse but many dry riverbeds carry moisture through the desert and are home to animals including elephants, black rhinos, and giraffe.
